Alaska, Horizon Resume Limited Service, Extend Reaccommodation Policy to Sept. 17

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 13, 2001--Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air are preparing to launch a reduced schedule this afternoon, following the Federal Aviation Administration's announcement that America's airways are open for commercial flights.

Both carriers plan to begin service sometime after noon and will operate a small percentage of their normally scheduled flights, after receiving approvals from all appropriate government agencies. The number of flights will increase each day as the carriers adjust their schedules to accommodate enhanced security measures.

"We appreciate the patience displayed by our customers following this national tragedy," said John F. Kelly, Alaska Airlines' chairman and CEO. "The entire industry and the FAA have worked closely to safely reopen the nation's skies."

As a result of new security directives, customers will encounter stepped up security measures. Some of those security measures include:

  • Discontinuation of curbside check-in and off-airport acceptance of checked baggage;

  • Limited access beyond security checkpoints to passengers only;

  • Increased aircraft and airport security inspections;

  • Increased passenger security screenings at all airports.

Alaska and Horizon also announced customers seeking to change their flights may now do so with no fee or penalty through Monday, September 17. Those seeking refunds, including refunds on nonrefundable tickets, for travel through September 17 may do so at no fee or penalty.

Because of the high volume of calls coming into Alaska and Horizon telephone reservations centers, customers are advised to go to the airlines' Web sites at www.alaskaair.com and www.horizonair.com for the latest information on the resumption of service.
