Alaska, Horizon Cancel Majority of Flights for Thursday

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 12, 2001--Alaska Airlines (NYSE:ALK) and Horizon Air have canceled the majority of scheduled flights for Thursday, tentatively planning to operate a small number of flights to reposition aircraft for Friday.

Both carriers are continuing to work to resume service at the earliest practical time consistent with the directives of the federal government and operational procedures for both carriers.

Alaska tentatively plans to operate a single flight Thursday from Madison, Wis., to Seattle, which the airline had hoped to operate on Wednesday. That flight, Alaska Flight No. 1, was diverted to Madison on Tuesday while en route from Washington, D.C., to Seattle and on to Anchorage.

Horizon Air also tentatively plans to operate a limited number of flights primarily to reposition aircraft for service on Friday.

As a result of the new security directives, customers will encounter stepped up security measures when flights resume. Some of those security measures include:

  • Discontinuation of curbside check-in and off-airport acceptance of checked baggage;

  • Limited access beyond security checkpoints to passengers only;

  • Increased aircraft and airport security inspections;

  • Increased passenger security screenings at all airports.

Because of the high volume of calls coming into Alaska and Horizon telephone reservations centers, customers are advised to go to airlines' Web sites at www.alaskaair.com and www.horizonair.com for the latest information on the resumption of service.
