Alaska Air Group Reports March Traffic

SEATTLE, Apr 3, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE) today reported March passenger traffic for its subsidiaries, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

Alaska Airlines' March traffic increased 4.6 percent to 1.158 billion revenue passenger miles (RPMs) from 1.107 billion flown a year earlier. This marks the third month in a row that the carrier's traffic has increased year over year.

Capacity during March was 1.623 billion available seat miles (ASMs), 4.5 percent higher than the 1.554 billion in March 2001.

The passenger load factor (the percentage of available seats occupied by fare paying passengers) for the month was 71.4 percent, compared to 71.3 in March 2001. The airline carried 1,232,000 passengers compared to 1,214,900 in March 2001.

RPMs for the three-month period totaled 2.977 billion, a 2.8 percent increase from the 2.895 billion recorded a year earlier. Capacity for the three months ended March 2002 increased 0.9 percent to 4.467 billion ASMs, compared to 4.428 billion in 2001.

The passenger load factor for the first three months of 2002 was 66.7 percent, compared to 65.4 percent in 2001. The airline carried 3,193,000 passengers compared to 3,198,000 in 2001.

HORIZON AIR

Horizon Air's March traffic increased 2.0 percent to 124.2 million RPMs from 121.7 million flown a year earlier. Capacity for March was 187.5 million ASMs, 1.1 percent lower than last year's 189.5 million.

The passenger load factor for the month was 66.2 percent, compared to 64.2 percent last March. The airline carried 405,900 passengers compared to 425,400 in March 2001.

RPMs for the three months ended March 2002 totaled 329.2 million, a 2.0 percent decrease from the 335.7 million recorded a year earlier. Capacity for the three-month period decreased 2.2 percent to 531.1 million ASMs, compared to 543.2 million in 2001.

The passenger load factor for the first three months of 2002 was 62.0 percent, compared to 61.8 percent in 2001. The airline carried 1,094,900 passengers, compared to 1,177,300 in 2001.
