Alaska Air Group Reports January Traffic

SEATTLE, Feb 5, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK) today reported January passenger traffic for its subsidiaries, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

    ALASKA AIRLINES
Alaska Airlines' January traffic increased 0.5 percent to 893.5 million revenue passenger miles (RPMs) from 889.4 million flown a year earlier. Capacity during January was 1.430 billion available seat miles (ASMs), 4.8 percent lower than the 1.503 billion in January 2001.

The passenger load factor (the percentage of available seats occupied by fare paying passengers) for the month was 62.5 percent, compared to 59.2 percent in January 2001. The airline carried 963,900 passengers compared to 985,800 in January 2001.

"We are gratified to see our first year-over-year increase in traffic since September 11th," said Bill Ayer, Alaska Airlines' chief executive officer. "Traffic levels have not yet fully recovered, but we are pleased by the continuing positive trend."

    HORIZON AIR
Horizon Air's January traffic decreased 8.4 percent to 99.8 million RPMs from 109.0 million flown a year earlier. Capacity for January was 171.7 million ASMs, 7.8 percent lower than last year's 186.2 million.

The passenger load factor for the month was 58.1 percent, compared to 58.6 percent last January. The airline carried 340,800 passengers compared to 383,300 in January 2001.
