Alaska Air Group Reports August Traffic

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 6, 2001--Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK) today reported August passenger traffic for its subsidiaries, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines' August traffic increased 12.7 percent to 1.329 billion revenue passenger miles (RPMs) from 1.179 billion flown a year earlier. Capacity during August was 1.754 billion available seat miles (ASMs), 12.5 percent higher than the 1.558 billion in August 2000.

The passenger load factor (the percentage of available seats occupied by fare paying passengers) for the month was 75.8 percent, compared to 75.7 percent in August 2000. The airline carried 1,504,500 passengers compared to 1,332,400 in August 2000.

RPMs for the eight-month period totaled 8.795 billion, a 7.2 percent increase from the 8.203 billion recorded a year earlier. Capacity for the eight months ended August 2001 increased 9.5 percent to 12.615 billion ASMs, compared to 11.525 billion in 2000.

The passenger load factor for the first eight months of 2001 was

  • 69.7 percent, compared to 71.2 percent in 2000. The airline carried 9,837,200 passengers compared to 9,228,600 in 2000.

Horizon Air

Horizon Air's August traffic increased 1.6 percent to 142.5 million RPMs from 140.3 million flown a year earlier. Capacity for August was 204.9 million ASMs, 0.1 percent higher than last year's 204.8 million.

The passenger load factor for the month was 69.5 percent, compared to 68.5 percent last August. The airline carried 480,800 passengers compared to 486,700 in August 2000.

RPMs for the eight-month period totaled 970.2 million, a 1.5 percent increase from the 955.4 million recorded a year earlier. Capacity for the eight months ended August 2001 decreased 0.6 percent to 1.528 billion ASMs, compared to 1.536 billion in 2000.

The passenger load factor for the first eight months of 2001 was

  • 63.5 percent, compared to 62.2 percent in 2000. The airline carried 3,360,800 passengers, compared to 3,404,700 in 2000.
